Still life with Amaryllis I and Still life with Peonies & Green Horse

Marking the seventh solo show for Irfan Cheema, inaugurated at Tanzara Art Gallery, this exhibition is the culmination of all his previous shows. Irfan has made a remarkable return, presenting newfound flowers and objects as subjects in his paintings.

A veteran of still life painting, Irfan has mastered the art of evoking emotions through the vibrancy of pigments while maintaining the harmonious intensity that defines his previous works. At this exhibition, Irfan himself was present to engage with viewers, witnessing them delve into and immerse themselves in his paintings. Each artwork carries a distinct tone of expression, resonating uniquely from piece to piece.

    Still life with Sunflowers I

In a conversation with Irfan, he expressed his deep fondness for his garden, which serves as the inspiration for many of the flowers depicted in his works. His love for gardening is a passion in itself, and his skills in curating still-life compositions are as exquisite as his paintings. Irfan shared that the marble stone slab, seen alongside the drapery of intricately hand-embroidered shawls in his works, has been a trusted backdrop for years. It is the platform where he curates the references for his paintings.

His compositions often feature a bowl or a beautifully arranged bunch of flowers alongside delicate Chinese pottery. Living in Shanghai, Irfan has developed a profound appreciation for hand-painted pottery, which is evident in his work. Sometimes, the compositions include Australian parrots with corn, creating organic arrangements that transport the viewer, making them feel like part of the scene.

Still Life with Lilies & Poppies

A gentle introduction to spring, this composition exudes freshness through its imagery. Blue pottery and silverware accompany white lilies and poppies, creating a striking contrast that embodies the quiet beauty of spring. The backdrop shawl stands out, reminiscent of the classic Renaissance era, reinterpreted with a modern twist. The depth and intricate brushstrokes draw the viewer into the details, inviting admiration for the thoughtful composition. The green leaves provide structure to the arrangement, while the red and white hues settle in harmonious comfort.

Still Life with Poppies & Birdcage

This composition evokes memories of flowers arranged for festive occasions, surrounded by silverware and teapots. Irfan has mastered the art of creating impactful visuals through bold compositions that balance structure and form. The vibrant colours pop on linen, reflecting the influence of Chinese culture in his work over the past two decades. The birdcage and blue pots symbolize freedom of expression, reflecting the life Irfan leads in Shanghai. Returning to his roots for this exhibition enriches his artistic soul, blending his global influences with a deep connection to his heritage.

Still Life with Lilies I & II

This duet of frames captures the essence of a slow day, a moment of intimacy and calm. These compositions exude soft energy, evoking the simplicity of painting a few watercolour flowers to unwind. The lilies, paired with silver and ceramic pieces, fit perfectly against the draped backdrop shawl. The shawls, with their intricate embroidery, add their own language to the artwork, complementing the serene tone and drawing the viewer into a meditative state.

Still Life with Amaryllis I & II

In these pieces, Irfan’s realistic approach shines through. The red and white hues tell their own story, compelling the viewer to look closer and explore the details, such as a duck ornament and a blue pottery pot in the background. The Amaryllis serves as the centrepiece, while the intricately decorated shawl ties the composition together. These works evoke solitude and pause the chaos, creating a subtle sense of peace and belonging. The calmness resonates with viewers, inviting them into the artist’s world.

Still Life with Poppies & Green Horse

The green horse ornament in this piece complements the vibrant poppies, radiating warmth and energy. The embroidered drapery of the shawl encapsulates the dynamic spirit of the artwork, drawing the viewer into its vibrant patterns. The combination of elements in this composition is striking, offering a comforting embrace through its visual language.

Irfan Cheema has developed a unique artistic language that communicates with viewers through his works. His love for flowers, birds, Chinese ornaments, and other objects finds a voice in each piece. This exhibition focuses on celebrating the beauty of life, encouraging us to embrace its goodness. Flora and fauna, as Irfan suggests, keep us grounded and alive, offering companionship and a silent language that speaks to the soul. Through his contemporary still-life art, Irfan continues to evolve, presenting a deeply personal yet universal narrative of harmony and joy.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
