With the onset of the holy month of Ramazan comes the hardest question of all- what to eat for Sehar and Iftaar? Suddenly, our entire world starts revolving around ‘food’ and we are bombarded with All You Can Eat Iftaar buffets and deals. For someone like me, who’d much rather choose a nice dinner over a tasteless Iftaar buffet, the recently launched pasta place ‘Fettuccine,’ was a breath of fresh air! Hearing rave reviews about this ‘Make Your Own Pasta’ (MYOP) place, I was more than delighted on giving it a shot. Located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Block 4, Near Maskan, Fettuccine is an intimate haven for pasta lovers.
The 20-seater cosy eatery was jam packed for Iftaar, so we placed our order and waited on the porch table outside by the window that was decorated with pretty flowers. The warm and cosy atmosphere makes you feel at home, while the furniture and décor have a vintage European vibe. Specializing in pasta, the place also offers a range of appetizers and Panini. After much discussion, we ordered a set of chicken strips and tangy fries for starters, leaving dynamite prawns and mozzarella sticks for next time. Skipping the Panini and going for the pastas, I decided to opt for the MYOP and ordered a combination of Chicken Fettuccine with Rouge Blanc Sauce (a blend of creamy white and red sauce), while my friend ordered the standard Penne Arrabbiata.
Surpassing our expectations, the starters were served under 15 minutes and were piping hot (10/10 for service, especially since the place was packed for iftaar). The crunchy chicken strips served 4 each in a cute little white bucket tasted very ordinary, but the delicious honey mustard sauce did the trick! (PKR 249 each). Dripping in cheese and mayo, the tangy fries were heavenly, and I devoured more than half of them in less than 10 minutes (PKR 199).
Next came the main entrées - steaming hot and freshly cooked, Penne Arrabbiata Pasta and the Fettuccine Alfredo. Loaded with thick, creamy Rouge Blanc Sauce and garnished with parmesan cheese (PKR 399), my entrée lived up to the hype in terms of taste, portion size and freshness. However, I was disappointed to note that the chicken seemed undercooked and upon cooling, the cream thickened far too much. Upon complaining, the dish was immediately replaced with a fresh one so kudos on the service. Much to our surprise, the hot and spicy Arrabbiata Pasta, was the unexpected winner of the night (PKR 399). Such a standard dish but cooked to perfection in a scrumptious tomato sauce, topped with olives and mushrooms, garnished with fresh parsley and served smoking hot, it won us over.
The lack of a drink and dessert menu was a letdown for me. We ended up ordering two cans of Pepsi for PKR 80 each. Even though the place is newly launched, customers usually like to have their options open when it comes to drinks - a mint lemonade in these summers would be a great addition to the menu!
With a total damage of PKR 1655 for two people, this pocket friendly place serves quality food and excels in service and hearty portion sizes. Also, brownie points for the décor! Skip the starters if you aren’t too hungry; just have the pasta with a drink on the side, and you’ll be done in PKR 500 each! With prices soaring to 2000 PKR per person at Iftaar buffets, this place is a life saver.
If you’re a pasta lover craving a hearty comforting meal that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg, try out Fettuccine for an instant fix!
