The Gorakh Hill Station, situated in the Kirthar Mountain range (the boundary between Sindh and Balochistan) is one of the most well-known tourist sites in Sindh. Known as the Murree of Sindh because of its spectacular views and cold weather, it is situated 100 kilometers from Daddu city. Gorakh Hill, which is situated at an elevation of 5600 feet, was named after Gorakhnath, a Hindu saint of the 11th century. It is also believed that the name Gorakh was adopted from the Sanskrit word 'Gorakh', which means intricate, complex and very difficult. However, according to some other historians, Gorakh means 'shepherding of sheep, cow and goat, etc'.
The station was launched as a hill station in 1989, and subsequently in the coming years, it attracted public attention. A hill station of this quality, situated in the deserts and plains of Sindh was a treat for the people of the region and drew crowds. However, the condition of roads to the Hill Station is bad. The road to the station starts from the Wahi Pandhi area of the Daddu district, and it takes around 2 hours to travel the 50 km area to reach the heavenly Gorakh Hill.
This is the most frightful road and only the skillful drivers on 4X4 jeeps can take you to the mighty hills from Wahi Pandhi, as normal cars aren't allowed because of the miserable condition of the road. Each year, many accidents happen as the road is quite curvy and narrow. But the assumption that dangerous roads lead to beautiful destinations keeps the tourists thrilled to visit the Hill Station.
As the altitude increases, the weather starts to become more pleasant. It is for this reason that people visit Gorakh Hill to avoid the humidity and hot weather of the mainland Sindh and Balochistan. Dadu is one of the hottest cities of Sindh during the summers and Gorakh Hill is a good escape from it. It also attracts tourists in winter, as it is the only place in Sindh where there is a snowfall. Therefore, due to its height and cold weather, it is also referred to as the "Murree of Sindh". However, the best time to visit the Gorakh Hill is during the summer months.
'Zero Point' is the highest point of the Gorakh Hill station and it is usually this area of the Hill which receives a snowfall. The view from zero point is breathtaking and magnificent. It is probably this view that captures the attention of a number of people. Clouds come down on these hills and the sunset is even more enchanting.
This scenic hill station is one of the prized tourist destinations of Sindh. Tourists usually stay for a night and enjoy musical programs and bonfires at night. When rain falls, the hills become green and the cattle are seen grazing on the grass. Various migratory birds, including finches and sparrows, can also be spotted in the Hill station in winters.
On the eve of New Year, a mega event under the name "Gorakh Festival" was organized at the Hill. Organized by one of the restaurant owners at Gorakh Hill and some locals, it was attended by about 300 people, had musical performances and some comedians to entertain. Several travel agencies offer tourist packages to the Gorakh Hill station, and facilitate them in transport, food and accommodation. Restaurants and guest houses have played a leading role in enhancing tourism, but because there are only a few guest houses, some people camp outdoors.
Gorakh Hill Station is a great tourist site in Sindh, and could attract more tourists if the road and infrastructure was developed. The Government of Sindh has, on several occasions, reiterated its plan to build resorts, parks, chairlifts, dispensaries and food outlets in the hill station. However, any practical step is yet to be taken to enhance the tourism activity in the Gorakh Hill Station.
