A Zafar Mairaj script spearheaded by the veteran director Kashif Nisar presents the perfect recipe for a premium show awaiting loads of critical acclaim. Mann Jogi (The Restless Mind), a recently released Hum TV show starring Bilal Abbass and Sabeena Farooq is one such drama, boasting a fresh premise along with a demure appeal that can only be experienced if one actually decides to watch the show. Here are a few shining gems that make Mann Jogi a potential industry favorite:
Most Pakistani dramas follow a traditional plot layout, with details being revealed step by step in a predictable manner. Mann Jogi, however, flips this narrative on its head with its labyrinthine buildup. The drama starts off with a mysterious scene involving multiple overlapping sequences. This mystical vibe continues throughout the episode, adding to the viewer's sense of desperation and intrigue. Instead of a past, present, future timeline, Mann Jogi weaves a complex tapestry of alternating timelines. This forces the viewers to engage with the plot and theorize about what is actually going on behind the curtain. This unprecedented spin on script-writing takes Mann Jogi several miles ahead of run-of-the-mill dramas.
Asma Abbas and Gohar Rasheed
The drama is essentially focused on the idea of remarrying the same person in the light of Shariah, known as Halaala. While this topic has been touched upon by other writers, Mann Jogi takes a crisp and head-on approach when it comes to tackling it along with the complications that such a union poses. The story begins when the female lead (Aliyah) gets divorced by her husband, only to be forced into a sham marriage with Ibrahim (played by Bilal Abbass) in order to carry out a premeditated Halaala. However, things take a turn when she refuses to return to her first husband after the second marriage. Thus, the drama doesn't shy away from making a bold statement and building on it. With only a couple of episodes in, the treatment of the premise appears to be flawless so far. Nevertheless, coming episodes will allow the viewers to form a solid opinion about whether or not the execution does justice to the central subject. That being said, the inclusion of complex social and religious themes in intelligently crafted media is commendable in its own right.
Bilal Abbas and Adnan Shah Tipu
When it comes to Kahif Nisaar's dramas, the atmosphere of the drama acts as a central character. The dark ambience of the setting coupled with the simultaneous exploration of equally morbid topics creates an intricate juxtaposition between literal and figurative darkness. Mann Jogi also utilizes this hack by imbuing every scene with a certain air of melancholy that perfectly suits the story of the show. The lighting, the camerawork as well as the chosen shooting places come together to create a unique effect that is both appealing and captivating.
Gohar Rasheed and Saad Azhar
There is absolutely no doubt about the acting calibre of actors like Bilal Abbass, Gohar Rasheed and Asma Abbass. Considering the depth of Mann Jogi and the hard-hitting nature of the involved themes, it must have been particularly challenging for the cast to accurately gauge the appropriate acting choices. However, it doesn't take more than a few scenes to conclude that every single actor is fully immersed in the character. The ability to portray such an elaborate and highly manifold range of emotions in the span of a few minutes is Abbas's innate talent. The power-packed performances elevate the narrative to the highest levels of perfection.

Social Issue dramas have a reputation for moving at a slow pace and being prone to becoming monotony. Mann Jogi effectively subverts this stereotype by introducing twists after regular intervals, thus fully captivating the audience. The plot advances at a quick but stable rate, managing to keep the viewers interested while also allowing enough time for deeper reflection. Every episode urges one to tune into the next one, which speaks volumes about the skilful pacing of the story.

Despite all the high praise attributed to Mann Jogi, it is still liable to falling off track. We are yet to find out how the story creates an overlap between religious themes and the artistic expression of the story. The first few episodes have certainly set a high standard for the future episodes to meet. However, it can be positively hoped that the rest of the show will meet expectations or even better, exceed them.
