    Bushra Ansari as Malika-e-Tabassum

Bushra Ansari, the embodiment of comic timing and talent, has attempted to consolidate her reign as the queen of comedy in Pakistan. With a career spanning over four decades, Ansari's remarkable comedic repertoire includes unforgettable roles such as Jahan Ara in Angan Tehra and Saima Chaudhry in the beloved Barat series. Her mastery of mimicry and caricatures has made her a household name, captivating audiences through television comedy talk shows. Recently, Ansari embarked on a new comedic venture with her stand-up show, Malika-e-Tabassum, presented by KopyKats Productions and Active Media.

Malika-e-Tabassum, directed by Dawar Mehmood, the mastermind behind KopyKats Productions, and produced by Saad Khan, the CEO of Active Media, marks Ansari's first foray into stand-up comedy, a daring step for an already accomplished performer. As an icon in the industry, Ansari's decision to embrace new challenges sets her apart from many Pakistani legends. It is important to acknowledge her courage in the willingness to explore uncharted territory and her unwavering dedication to pushing artistic boundaries.

However, while Ansari's comedic genius is unquestionable, Malika-e-Tabassum falls short of delivering the laughter that one would expect from such a seasoned performer. The show's flaw lies primarily in the execution of its material. Ansari's stories, intended as setups for punchlines, often extend far too long, losing their impact by the time the punchline arrives. In her illustrious 40-year career, Ansari has shared numerous hilarious incidents from her life in interviews and talk shows. Unfortunately, the selection of anecdotes in Malika-e-Tabassum feels dry, lacking the comedic flair that fans have come to expect.

Furthermore, the show's attempt at incorporating brazen humor leads to an overall sense of awkwardness. Ansari's undeniable charm and likability make it difficult to fully embrace these jokes, resulting in a disconnect between the performer and the audience. Similarly, some of the jokes about marriage and relationships carry a bitter undertone, which is uncharacteristic for someone of Ansari's stature. While the stand-up comedy world thrives on awkwardness, it is important to recognize that in the year 2023, making jokes about other women's appearances can be perceived as inappropriate and out of touch.

The production elements of Malika-e-Tabassum also contribute to its shortcomings. The theatrics, including the grand entrance, lack the desired impact and fail to leave a lasting impression on the audience. The minimalist stage design, consisting of an awkward loveseat and a bouquet of flowers, does not befit the regal ambiance implied by the show's title. Attention to production details such as staging, costume choices, and overall visual appeal would have elevated the audience's experience and enhanced the impact of Ansari's performance.

Nevertheless, despite these flaws, there are moments within the show that highlight Ansari's exceptional talent. Her homage to Madam Noor Jehan and her spot-on mimicry showcase what Malika-e-Tabassum could have been, had it focused more on Ansari's strengths. Additionally, the few jokes about the establishment injected humor into the performance, albeit arriving late in the show when the audience's enthusiasm had begun to wane.

In hindsight, Malika-e-Tabassum could have greatly benefited from Ansari's involvement in the joke-writing process or collaboration with comedic genius Anwar Maqsood, a longtime friend and previous collaborator. Furthermore, investing in a stage design that truly matched the grandeur of the show's title would have elevated the overall visual appeal and presentation. It is crucial to emphasize that the shortcomings of the show primarily stem from production aspects rather than Ansari's undeniable talent and comedic prowess.

The verdict, then is that Malika-e-Tabassum falls short of fulfilling its comedic potential, which is regrettable given the stature of Bushra Ansari as the queen of comedy in Pakistan. However, it is essential to recognize that Ansari's legacy remains untarnished. Her decision to embark on this new venture is a testament to her willingness to explore uncharted territories in the comedic realm. While Malika-e-Tabassum may not have lived up to expectations, it serves as a reminder of the brilliance and laughter that Bushra Ansari has brought to Pakistani comedy throughout her remarkable career. What is certain is that we are nowhere near done watching Bushra Ansari bring laughter to her audience, just give her the reign to do what she does best and watch magic happen.
