The entrance of Mandi Al Khaleej

Mandi Al Khaleej in Gulistan-e-Johar, Karachi, is a newly opened gem that promises an enchanting journey through the flavours of the Arabian Peninsula. As I approached the bustling streets, the tantalizing aroma of aromatic spices and slow-cooked meats filled the air, beckoning me inside for an unforgettable dining experience.

Nestled within this vibrant cityscape, Mandi Al Khaleej welcomed me with an inviting charm that instantly set the stage for a memorable culinary adventure. The exterior exuded warmth with its traditional Arabian design, adorned with intricate details that paid homage to a rich cultural heritage.

Stepping through the door, I was enveloped in an ambience that was both cosy and welcoming. Soft lighting cast a gentle glow over the rustic decor, while ornate lanterns hung from the ceiling, adding a touch of elegance to the space. Plush cushions lined the seating areas, inviting me to relax and savour every moment of my dining experience.

The heart of Mandi Al Khaleej lay in its bustling kitchen, where skilled chefs meticulously prepared the signature dishes that would soon grace my table. Large clay ovens, known as "taboons," imparted a smoky flavour to the tender meats as they slow-roasted to perfection. Meanwhile, pots of fragrant rice simmered on the stovetop, infusing the air with the tantalizing scent of spices.

As I settled into my seat, the attentive staff greeted me with warm smiles and expert recommendations, guiding me through the menu with care and attention to detail. Each dish was a masterpiece, crafted with precision and passion, reflecting the culinary excellence of the Arabian Peninsula.

My culinary journey began with a comforting bowl of clear bone broth, known as "shorba," which served as the perfect prelude to the feast that awaited me. Its savoury depth and delicate balance of flavours cleansed the palate, and set the stage for the culinary delights to come.

Next came the appetizers: hummus and pita, along with a vibrant fatoosh salad. The hummus was creamy and smooth, with a subtle kick of garlic and a hint of nuttiness from the tahini. Paired with warm, fluffy pita bread, it was the perfect combination of textures and flavours. The fatoosh salad, with its crisp greens, crunchy vegetables and toasted pieces of pita bread, provided a refreshing burst of freshness that invigorated the senses.

For the main course, I was treated to a feast fit for royalty: mutton mandi and mutton mafdoon, accompanied by the traditional red and green sauces, and falafel. The mutton mandi was a triumph of flavour and tenderness, with each bite melting in my mouth and transporting me to distant lands. The mutton mafdoon, with its rich spices and aromatic sauce, was a true testament to the culinary heritage of Yemen.

The accompaniments were equally delightful: the fiery red sauce added a bold kick to every bite, while the refreshing green sauce provided a cooling contrast that balanced the richness of the meat. The falafel, with its crispy exterior and tender centre, was a savoury delight that left me craving more.

To complement the meal, I enjoyed refreshing mint lemonades that provided a burst of citrusy freshness with each sip. And as the grand finale, I indulged in a decadent cream kunafa that was as beautiful as it was delicious. Its golden-brown exterior gave way to a gooey centre of delightful cream, enveloped in a sweet and sticky syrup that left me utterly satisfied.

One thing that sets Mandi Al Khaleej apart from other Mandi establishments in the city is the fact that they also offer single-person servings of all their dishes instead of just family-style platters. This gives diners the chance to explore a variety of dishes in one sitting.

Throughout my dining experience at Mandi Al Khaleej, the hospitality of the staff was exemplary, with every detail attended to with care and attention. From the warm welcomes to the expert recommendations, I felt like a valued guest from start to finish.

In conclusion, Mandi Al Khaleej is a culinary gem that offers an unforgettable journey through the flavours of the Arabian Peninsula. With its inviting ambience, exquisite dishes and unparalleled hospitality, it is a destination not to be missed for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Arabia in the heart of Karachi.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
