As Ramadan approaches each year, Pakistani television networks prepare a lineup of special dramas designed to entertain families during the holy month. Unlike typical television serials that often focus on intense emotional conflicts, Ramadan dramas are known for their humor, warmth and lighthearted storytelling, making them perfect for relaxed post-Iftar viewing.

This year, three dramas, Ishq Di Chashni, My Dear Cinderella and Dil Wali Gali Mein, have emerged as popular favorites, each bringing a unique flavor to the screen. But what makes these dramas so appealing? How can they be improved, and why do viewers eagerly await Ramadan dramas each year?

Why Ramadan Dramas Capture Audience Attention

Ramadan dramas are different from regular television serials in many ways. Their limited-episode format ensures a fast-paced narrative, preventing unnecessary drag or repetition. These shows also tend to focus on themes of love, family and personal growth, resonating deeply with audiences who seek uplifting and comforting content during Ramadan.

Additionally, these dramas serve a social function. Many people gather with family after Iftar, and television becomes a shared experience. Unlike heavier, issue-driven dramas, Ramadan dramas offer humor, romance and warmth, making them accessible to all age groups.

Another factor is the star-studded casts. Producers often bring in popular actors to create buzz around these dramas, ensuring strong audience engagement. The production quality, colorful sets and festive atmosphere, also adds to their charm, making them visually and emotionally appealing.

Ishq Di Chashni: A Battle of Sweetness and Romance

Airing on Green Entertainment, Ishq Di Chashni follows the journey of Rakshi Butt, an ambitious woman who dreams of running a mithai shop, and Sheikh Sheharyar, a competitive restaurateur. Their rivalry gradually turns into a romantic connection, creating a charming blend of comedy and emotions.

    Strengths

The drama stands out for its unique setting in the food business, an aspect rarely explored in Pakistani television. The witty dialogues and playful banter between the lead pair, played by Khushhal Khan and Sehar Khan, keep viewers entertained. The show also offers an interesting contrast between traditional and modern business approaches, subtly commenting on changing social dynamics.

The OST, Ho Gaya Hai Ishq, has further added to its popularity, drawing in music lovers and enhancing the emotional depth of key scenes.

    Areas for Improvement

One of the main criticisms of Ishq Di Chashni has been its portrayal of a character with dwarfism, which was initially handled insensitively. The controversy led to modifications, but it highlighted the need for better representation of diverse characters in Pakistani dramas. Moreover, while the romantic rivalry is engaging, some side plots feel underdeveloped. A stronger focus on secondary characters and their arcs could have added more layers to the story.

My Dear Cinderella: A Modern Fairytale with a Twist

Hum TV’s My Dear Cinderella reimagines the classic fairytale for a contemporary audience. The protagonist, Sana, played by Zara Peerzada, refuses to wait for a prince to change her life. Instead, she carves her own path, making this drama a refreshing take on independence and self-worth.

    Strengths

One of the most appealing aspects of My Dear Cinderella is its fresh take on traditional romance. Sana is not a damsel in distress but a confident, self-reliant woman who challenges conventional expectations. The drama also incorporates visually stunning sets, vibrant costumes and an aesthetically pleasing color palette, enhancing its fairytale-like charm.

Zara Peerzada’s debut performance has been widely praised, as she brings a new energy to the screen. Her chemistry with Khaqan Shahnawaz, who plays the male lead Afrasiab, adds to the drama’s appeal. The soundtrack, featuring Ali Zafar and Afshan Fawad, further elevates the overall experience.

    Areas for Improvement

Despite its strengths, My Dear Cinderella occasionally struggles with pacing. Some episodes feel stretched, with unnecessary fillers that could have been trimmed for a tighter narrative.

Additionally, while the main character is well-developed, the supporting cast remains underutilized. More depth in their stories could have created a richer, more immersive world.

Dil Wali Gali Mein: A Celebration of Love and Community

Dil Wali Gali Mein presents a lively neighborhood where relationships, aspirations, and emotions intertwine. Sajal Aly plays Khadija "Deeju" Adnan, a young woman determined to marry Mujtaba "Mujji" Siddiqui, played by Hamza Sohail. The drama highlights the beauty of close-knit communities and traditional values in an engaging, humorous manner.

    Strengths

What sets this drama apart is its portrayal of a vibrant community where each character plays a significant role. Unlike typical love stories that focus solely on the protagonists, Dil Wali Gali Mein weaves together multiple narratives, creating a well-rounded and immersive experience.

Sajal Aly and Hamza Sohail share excellent chemistry, and their performances bring authenticity to their roles. The drama’s humor, often derived from everyday situations, makes it relatable and enjoyable for audiences of all ages.

Additionally, the drama successfully incorporates social themes, such as the importance of mutual support in communities and the challenges of navigating relationships in traditional settings.

    Areas for Improvement

While the drama is heartwarming, its romantic plot follows familiar tropes. A more unconventional or layered approach to Deeju and Mujji’s relationship could have made the narrative even more compelling.

Some side characters, despite having strong potential, do not receive enough screen time. Expanding their arcs could have added further richness to the drama.

    Why Audiences Love Ramadan Dramas

Beyond the humor and romance, Ramadan dramas cater to an audience looking for positivity and escapism. In a world where news is often filled with stress and uncertainty, these dramas offer a temporary respite, providing viewers with feel-good entertainment. Another key reason for their success is the relatability of their characters. Whether it’s a young woman chasing her dreams, a neighborhood filled with gossip and camaraderie, or a fairytale romance with a modern twist, these dramas reflect aspects of everyday life. They bring together different generations, allowing families to enjoy shared moments of laughter and nostalgia.

Furthermore, the festive atmosphere surrounding Ramadan plays a role in these dramas’ popularity. Just as people look forward to Eid celebrations, they also anticipate these special TV serials, which have now become an annual tradition.

The Future of Ramadan Dramas: What Can Be Done Better?

While Ramadan dramas have carved out a beloved niche in Pakistani entertainment, there is always room for growth. Going forward, producers can focus on:

    • Diverse Storytelling: Introducing new and unique plots rather than repeating familiar romantic tropes.
    • Stronger Female Characters: While this year’s dramas featured strong women, more nuanced portrayals can further enrich the narrative.
    • Balanced Humor: Avoiding insensitive jokes or portrayals that may offend certain groups, ensuring humor remains lighthearted and inclusive.
    • Well-Developed Supporting Characters: Giving side characters more depth to create a richer storytelling experience.

Ishq Di Chashni, My Dear Cinderella, and Dil Wali Gali Mein have each added something special to the Ramadan 2025 lineup.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment.
