An exhibition and concluding ceremony for a poster competition titled ‘One Belt One Road in my Eyes’ was held on Friday, 26th April at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Islamabad. The competition was held by the China Cultural Centre of Pakistan in collaboration with All Pakistan China Friendship Association (APCFA). Ms. Noreen Farooq Ibrahim, Member of National Assembly (MNA), Mr. Zhang Heqing, Cultural Counsellor of Chinese Embassy, and Ms. Atiya Qutab, President APCFA participated as chief guests and inaugurated the exhibition.
On the occasion, Ms. Noreen Farooq, expressed her appreciation of the posters and said, “I see the One Belt One Road as a once in a lifetime opportunity. The New Silk Road is the dawn of a new era which will bring endless opportunities. This is the start of a new beginning and sky is the limit.”
The poster competition was conducted from September 2018 to January 2019, with more than 200 students of 23 schools from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Taxila and Peshawer participating. The exhibition displayed 53 posters by 13 schools, of which 7 had been declared winning posters, while participants ranged from ages 8 to 16 years of age.
The first prize was won by the poster ‘Together We Are,’ painted by four students, Zainab Khalid, Mariam Bashir, Rahma Bint-e-Atif and Yahya Bin Fahd, of the Apex Education System. It showcased people of different nationalities holding hands along the Belt and Road with the caption, ‘Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.’ While addressing the ceremony, Yahya said that he was excited by the topic of One Belt One Road, because it was about the concept of unity, which is what their team work also reflects.
The second prize was won by the poster ‘Building Friendship’ by Marjan Yadikar from Super Nova School System, and depicted the people of China and Pakistan crossing a bridge to come together like the branches of an old tree. The third prize was won by ‘Road of Success,’ created by Mariyam Abbas of Headway Escula School, Rawalpindi. The usage of bright colours and wonderful details such as a Faisal Mosque and a Chinese dragon resulted in a striking poster. Ajmal Khan and Junaid Hakim, from Ali Trust College, Islamabad created the 4th prize poster, ‘Winner,’ which depicted China and Pakistan as shaking hands while leaving behind developed nations. The 5th prize was won by Palwasha Atif from Super Nova School System, for her poster ‘Blossoming Friendship,’ in which she brought together the national flowers, plum blossom and jasmine, to reflect the unity of both nations. The 6th prize was shared by two competitors, Fatima Afzal from Super Nova and Hadiqa Imran from Pakistan Cambridge School. While Fatima’s ‘The Road’ was a beautifully painted poster showing a Markhor looking down at the Karakorum Highway, Hadiqa’s poster showed a Panda and Markhor peacefully existing on the same land.
The winners were awarded certificates and souvenirs at the conclusion of the ceremony. They will also be travelling to China later in the year. The exhibition will be displayed and open for public till 3rd May, 2019 at the China Cultural Centre, PNCA, Islamabad.
