Ever wondered how a paradise-like haven would feel like? If you ask that question and immediately think of serene beaches, fresh breeze and the best food, then Gwadar is a must visit vacation spot for you. It is not uncommon to hear the phrase “hidden gem” regarding things or places that are underrated, but Gwadar truly wins that title as the city in Balochistan overlooking the Indian ocean, with a vast array of wonders to offer to its visitors.

    Unique landscape in Gwadar

Nestled along the southwestern coast of Pakistan, Gwadar is an emerging gem that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and modern development. It was once a dormant fishing town that was not frequented by outsiders, but Gwadar is now rapidly transforming into a major port city under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. Gwadar is home to some of the most pristine and unspoiled beaches in Pakistan. What anyone can only imagine as the fantasized postcard version of a sea view, Gwadar has to offer such serene beaches in actuality. The golden sands and deep blue-gray waters of Gwadar Beaches provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation and water activities. Whether you enjoy sunbathing, swimming, or simply strolling along the shore, these beaches offer an excellent escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The most fascinating part about these beaches is how therapeutic being in the presence of crashing waves feels.

    Serene beaches

Speaking of therapeutic waves, the best part about Gwadar is that whenever one feels like taking a good stroll, the marine drive is the best place to be. It is by far the most breathtaking sight, with the hammerhead insight, the hook with the colourful boats, and if you’re lucky enough to catch yourself on a walk during a full moon, the giant roaring of waves is a sight to behold. Marine Drive in Gwadar is a coastal boulevard that stretches along the ocean waters. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of the ocean not just for leisurely strolls, but sunset watching and photography. As one drives along the Marine Drive, you’ll encounter a mix of modern development and natural beauty, with new hotels and cafes lining the road on one side and the ocean on the other, providing convenient stops for refreshments and hanging out with family. Especially at night, Marine Drive transforms into a lively hub with street vendors offering local delicacies and handicrafts, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The illuminated coastline, with the streetlights reflected in the water, is mesmerizing. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet evening walk or indulging in some local treats, Marine Drive offers a delightful experience that captures the essence of Gwadar’s coastal charm.

One of Gwadar’s most iconic natural landmarks, however, is the Hammerhead, a stunning rocky outcrop that pokes out into the Arabian Sea. Aptly named for its distinctive shape (a landmass shaped like a hammer), the Hammerhead offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the vast expanse of the ocean. This geological wonder is not only a visual treat, but also a popular spot for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Hiking to the top of the Hammerhead provides a thrilling experience, with the rewarding sight of the sun setting over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the rugged cliffs and the waters in their lunar-inspired shifting shapes and colours. The most intriguing part about the Hammerhead is that you can watch both the sunset and sunrise through the sea, due to the geographical position of this mass of land.

Gwadar is home to several historical sites that reflect its strategic importance and historical significance. The ancient Gwadar Fort, built by the Portuguese, stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past. The old town area, with its narrow streets and traditional architecture, provides a glimpse into the city’s storied history. Although not entirely open to the public, the Gwadar fort contains a museum showcasing old Omani ethnological relics, and the fort itself embodies a historical time. Other than that, visiting the local markets and interacting with the friendly residents can provide a memorable cultural experience for tourists. A reason why Gwadar might become your immediate favourite vacation destination, is that just how you would visit a foreign country and explore their markets for unique snacks and drinks, Gwadar offers the same experience. This is because the markets in Gwadar mostly have Iranian products, and one can immerse oneself in finding new kinds of cheese and chocolates.

With the development of Gwadar Port and the construction of the Gwadar Free Zone, the city is poised to become a major economic hub. The modern infrastructure, including new hotels and resorts (such as the Gwadar Club and Pearl Continental Hotel), and shopping centers, ensures that visitors have access to all the amenities they need for a comfortable stay. The development of the Gwadar International Airport will further enhance the city’s connectivity, making it more accessible to tourists in the future. A point to bear in mind, however, is that the by-road travel towards Gwadar through the Makrani coastal highway is an adventure-worthy of an experience. The landscape makes you feel like you’re on another planet altogether: the Martian-like landscapes of the Buzi Pass and the Hangol Nation Park are home to the Princess of Hope and the Sphinx of Balochistan. The latter is a natural rock formation resembling the Egyptian Sphinx, adding an element of adventure and mystery to one’s trip. Speaking of rock formations, the Gwadar Cricket Stadium is by far the most beautiful cricket stadium anyone can ever experience within Pakistan, at least. It has a backdrop of a stunning rock formations with lush green grass that contrasts the browns of the rocky mountain. It is amongst the must visit places within Gwadar.

Gwadar is a hidden gem with unbelievable natural beauty, that makes it ideal for a vacation get-away. From its pristine beaches and mighty landscapes to its vibrant local culture and historical significance, Gwadar offers a diverse array of experiences for every traveler.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
